BREAKFAST MEETINGS

Join us for our weekly breakfast meetings at the "Marriott at CenterPoint" restaurant in Pontiac Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. for an interesting guest speaker, good food, and conversation.  The hotel is located on the southwest corner of Opdyke Rd. and Centerpoint Parkway, and it is clearly visible from Square Lake Rd.  A wonderful buffet breakfast is served in a room off the grill.  Formed in May 1984, the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club has helped over 9,000 area children since it's inception. Our major activities and fund raising events include the "Heart of the Hills Run", a "Children's Holiday Wish Program", The Annual Optimist Golf Outing, and more.   See more detail below.

MISSION STATEMENT

Optimist International's mission is to foster an optimistic way of life, through a network of optimists, dedicated to the full development of their potential in order to provide ever-expanding service to youth, the community and the world.

The Bloomfield Hills Optimists Club implements and sponsors programs that inspire our youth with a sense of their own possibilities.

VISION STATEMENT

Optimist International will be recognized worldwide as an organization of people committed to optimism and self-development for the improvement of youth and community.

ANNUAL FUND RAISERS:

Golf Outing:  Each May, for 21 years, the club has co-sponsored a Golf Outing with the Bloomfield Township Fire Department in the "Scramble" format. The last couple of years it has been at the Wabeek Country Club.  Click HERE to go to the details page.

Heart of the Hills 5 & 10 K Run:  For 18 years the club has co-sponsored a 5-10K run at Andover High School.  Click HERE for the details page.

Dream Cruise:  For the last few years the club has co-sponsored a  Dream Cruise display at the Mercedes dealer in Birmingham.  The proceeds a split with Bloomfield Township, Oakland Family Services and our club.  Contact Stuart McCormick at 248-540-3733 for details.

THE BLOOMFIELD OPTIMIST PROJECT LIST:

Youth Appreciation Day: We contact each High School in our area. We ask the principal, teachers to identity the out-standing students, that they wish to honor. We provide breakfast, we acknowledge each student accomplishment and recognition to the students and their parents.

Holiday Wish Program: We contact a local social organization to identity needy children. We do an out-reach to local businesses to participate in shopping and wrapping a Gift for each child. The club delivers the presents to the children before they leave School for the holiday. 

Essay Contest: Local High School’s English and Forensic Departments are contacted and asked to encourage student participation. The students under 19 years of age as of Dec 31st are asked to write an essay on a topic given to us by Optimist International. The 2007 topic is "I Want to Make a Difference Because...". We enlist the expertise of noted writers to judge the essays. The top 3 are asked to present their essay to the club. The Winner then goes on the to Michigan District level and the Michigan District winner will go on to the national contest and have an opportunity to compete for a $6,000 scholarship. Oratorical Contest: Local High School English and Forensic Departments are contacted. The students are given a topic (by National). The students, parents and teachers are invited to the club breakfast. Independent judges, judge the student’s speeches that morning. The winners go on to next level. Winners compete for scholarships at the national level.

Tri-Star Basketball: Area middle school students are contacted for a basketball skill Test. We use a local gym, and set up 3 stations to test the children ages 7-13. The stations are shooting, dribbling, and passing. The winners receive trophies.

Respect for Law: The club goes out into the community to find a person who has Done out-standing service related to law enforcement. We honor this person at a Club breakfast.

Respect for Education: The club goes out into the community to find a person who Has done out-standing service for children in the area of education. We honor this Person at a club breakfast.

Sand Castles: Each August, in co operation with the grief counseling organization of Henry Ford Hospital, the club spends part of a Sunday cooking lunch for the campers so the counselors can spend more time with the children at camp.
