UPCOMING EVENTS

YOUTH APPRECIATION DAY

On October 30 we will hold our annual Youth Appreciation Day. We select a few students who have stood out in their community. We give them and their parents a great breakfast, and each student honored gets a book on a current topic. The event will be held at the Pontiac Marriott at Centerpoint. Contact Laurie Marshall at laurie_marshall@ml.com

MI DISTRICT 1ST QUARTER MEETING

The Optimist Michigan District is holding its 1st quarter meeting at the Pontiac Marriott at Centerpoint on Nov 14-16. That means we are the hosting club. We plan on having a reception in one of the hotel’s banquet rooms. We will need volunteers to meet and greet other Optimists.

CHILDRENS WISH

Labor Day has come and past and that means that Childrens Wish is coming upon us. Last year we provided gifts for over 2,600 disadvantaged children throughout the metro area. Chief Elf Brian MacKenzie is running it again this year. We need more sponsors. If you work for or know of a business or organization that buy gifts please let us know. We will have our wrapping center at Organic again. We plan to have labels ready for distribution by Monday, October 27. Delivery dates are OLHSA on Wednesday, December 10, PAE on Thursday, December 11 and AJ Stepanski on Friday, December 12. We always need more volunteers for gift pick up and delivery on the above dates. Contact Brian at 248-505-8400 or bjmacken@comcast.net.

SUCCESSES

MIKE DELOSH GOLF SCRAMBLE

We had the Mike Delosh Golf Scramble on Monday, July 21 at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion. The event was well attended, the weather was good, and everyone had a great time. The event raised about $17,000 for Mike Delosh to help with medical expenses. Good Job!!!!

HEART OF THE HILLS

On Saturday, July 26, the Bloomfield Township Recreation Dept held the 18th Heart of the Hills 10K & 5K races at Andover High School. There were over 400 runners this year and the weather was wonderful. We had about 70 volunteers and all had a great time. Another Good Job!!!

SANDCASTLES

The Sandcastles lunch was Sunday, August 17, at Camp Tamarack in Brandon Township. There were about 300 participants this year which means lots of hot dogs. We had 18 volunteers for another successful outing. Great job everyone!!!

EMPOWERMIND

Empowermind President Kimberly Kassner taught a program for the teens at Starr Commonwealth. These teens have many obstacles against learning. Many were skeptical of the day long program. However, Kimberly reached them early on. At lunch time, some of the girls went to the administration to ask them to get the boys under control so that they could learn. That speaks volumes. Great job Kimberly. The Board recently authorized the funds to have Kimberly provide the same program at PAE.

INSTALLATION DINNER

On Saturday, September 27 we installed the 2008-2009 BHOC leadership. President-elect Tamara Tazzia offered her house for this party. We played bocce, ate some wonderful chili and celebrated our club. You can see photos at our website. Tamara, Vice President-elect Jay Craven and several others were sworn in by Michigan District Governor-elect Mike Seltzer. We thank Tamara for letting us into her home for this party.

HEAD START

We have been looking for a community program that we could provide a service for, similar to what we did with the Women’s Survival Center. Through the help of OLHSA we have found a new program where we read to the Head Start kids. So, every last Thursday of the month we will meet at OLHSA to read and interact. The first one was held on September 25 and there were 10 Optimists there. The next one is scheduled for October 23 (October 30 is Youth Appreciation Day). Adela Knedlik is the contact person at 248-209-2621 or mailto:aknedlik@olhsa.org

41pounds.org

The average adult gets about 41 pounds of junk mail per year. Sign up and their website will stop 85-90% of junk mail for $41. Over one third of the fee goes to a charitable organization of your choice. Why mention this here? Because our club is one of the charitable organizations that you can choose to benefit. Get more info and sign up at http://www.41pounds.org/.  Some may remember when Sander DeVries spoke to the club last year. Sander is the brains behind the website.

OPTIMIST CREED

PROMISE YOURSELF-

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
