UPCOMING EVENTS

MIKE DELOSH GOLF SCRAMBLE

Join us on Monday, July 21 at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion for a golf outing to support Mike Delosh’s healing. It costs $175 to golf, and receive an arrival gift, complimentary pop and water, Chuck Wagon style lunch, and snacks and cash bar afterward. It is a shot gun start at 12:15 PM. View a map at our website. Register at www.golfdigestplanner.com/5482-MikesGolfScramble

HEART OF THE HILLS

On Saturday, July 26, the Bloomfield Township Recreation Dept will host the 18th Heart of the Hills 10K & 5K races at Andover High School. The races start at 8:00 AM and we need volunteers before, during and after the race. Volunteers contact Kris Miller at Kris.miller@bestsourcecu.org.

WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE

On Saturday, August 16, the 14th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise will occur. We get the use of the Mercedes Benz dealership parking lot on the east side of Woodward just south of Big Beaver Rd. From 7:30am-11:30am we park cars for the general public and charge a fee. This event is a major fund raiser for us. Contact Stuart McCormick at stuart.mccormick@raymondjames.com or 248-540-3733. In addition, our very own Robert Dempster’s band, RG Dempster and the Drivers, has recorded a CD for the Dream Cruise. The CD will be available for purchase at $10. Go to his website www.detroitrocksusa.com and download a copy of “Drive On” for 99 cents. Listen for this song on the local oldies stations in the near future. Robert played a couple of songs in the Marriott parking lot (on CD, not live). I compare the sound to Mitch Ryder, and maybe the Temptations. Good, strong, rhythmic Dee-troit Rock and Roll.

SANDCASTLES

The Sandcastles lunch is Sunday, August 17, at Camp Tamarack in Brandon Township. The Sandcastles program is a youth grief counseling program run by Henry Ford Hospital. We cook lunch for the kids, the counselors, and family members. This allows the counselors to spend time with the family on their last day in the program. Please arrive by 10:30 AM and it is usually over by 2:00 PM. Contact Phyllis Zimmerman at dezpaz@aol.com for more information.

INSTALLATION DINNER

On Saturday, September 27 we will install the 2008-2009 BHOC leadership. Tamara Tazzia has offered her house for this party. Hey, Tamara is the 2008-2009 President-elect. The party will start at 4:00 PM with games, followed by a chili contest afterward. This event will be a fundraiser and a NOW (New Optimists Wanted) function. We ask that each guest donate $25 and that each member bring one person who they think will make a good Optimist.  Contact Laurie Marshall at laurie_marshall@ml.com and please respond to the evite that she sent to all members.

EMPOWERMIND

On April 3, Kimberly Kassner presented to us her short talk on Empowermind, her successful program that raises yours & your child’s self esteem by improving work & academic performance. She had us memorize 12 words through a wonderful technique. Kimberly has offered the Empowermind program for 25 at risk youth of our choice. We will most likely accept her offer. Since this event will most likely occur before the next newsletter, look to the website for more information.

L. BROOKS PATTERSON ROAST

On Wednesday, April 23, the Oakland County Republican Party will hosted a roast of L. Brooks Patterson in downtown Rochester. Seven members attended and had a great time.  Diane Harnich presented a check for $350.00 from the Oakland County Republican Party to club in June. Thanks Diane!

GOLF OUTING

The 22nd Annual Golf Outing to benefit the Bloomfield Township Fire Department Charities and our charities was held on Monday, May 19 at Wabeek Country Club in Bloomfield Hills. We sold out golf openings for the first time, and the entire event was a tremendous success. The Carl’s Golfland golfers won the event. Thanks to Leo Chartier for his energy and direction year after year.

41pounds.org

The average adult gets about 41 pounds of junk mail per year. Sign up and their website will stop 85-90% of junk mail for $41. Over one third of the fee goes to a charitable organization of your choice. Why mention this here? Because our club is one of the charitable organizations that you can choose to benefit. Get more info and sign up at www.41pounds.org.  Some may remember when Sander DeVries spoke to the club last year. Sander is the brains behind the website.

OPTIMIST CREED

PROMISE YOURSELF-

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
